Student Residential Telephone Service Telecommunications, a division of Hopkins Information Technology Services, provides student residential telephone services. These services are available to residential halls, which include Wolman, McCoy, AMR I, II, III (Buildings A & B), and University owned apartments, which include Homewood, Bradford, and The Hopkins Inn. Campus-to-Campus Services A telephone is connected in all residential hall dorms and University-owned apartments. However, if more than one telephone is preferred in a room, you must supply your own analog telephone. At no charge to you, telephones are equipped with voice mail, three way calling, call waiting, and call forwarding. Until you activate Direct Dial Services, your calls are limited to the intra-campus. However, you are able to receive incoming calls from family and friends. Direct Dial Services If you would like to make local, long distance, and international calls, all you need to do is activate the service with an authorization code that will be provided to you by Telecommunications during "Student Move In Weekend." You can activate this service and obtain your authorization code prior to move in weekend by completing the Local & Long Distance Activation Form and email it to srts@jhu.edu or call Telecom at 410-735-6620 to sign up for service. There is no fee to activate or install this service. However, you will be charged a monthly service and telephone usage fee. Monthly Fee and Telephone Usage Rates Once Direct Dial Services have been activated, a student will be billed for service and usage monthly until the end of the school term. The monthly service fee is $10.00. Local telephone calls will be billed at a rate of $0.09 per call. All domestic long distance calls will be billed at a rate of $0.07 per minute any time, and international calls are discounted 15% off of AT&T's rate with even lower rates to the most frequently called countries. There are NO SURCHARGES, TAXES OR MONTHLY FEES APPLIED to these services. A student can terminate these services by notifying Telecom anytime during the school year. Cellular Telephone Cellular telephone service is popular and convenient. However, it can be costly if the correct calling plan is not chosen. Be aware that airtime minutes are used when checking voice mail, voice mail may not accept messages when out of a local calling area, monthly minutes do not carryover to the next bill period, and taxes and fees apply. Remember, cellular telephones must be on and charged to receive calls. As an affordable alternative, Student Residential Telephone Services provides intra-campus, local and long distance calls at Hopkins Campus rates. However, if you would like cellular telephone service, we have made arrangements with Cingular Wireless for all JHU students to receive special rates. If you are interested in additional information or in purchasing cellular telephone service, call Jimmy Williams at 410-782-7663. Jimmy Williams is the JHU Plan Representative at Cingular. Telephone Repairs Normal repairs and maintenance of University telephone equipment is the responsibility of Telecommunications. If repairs are found to be because of student negligence, the student will be responsible for paying for these repairs. Telephone problems can be reported by calling Telecommunications at 443-997-7660, by emailing a detailed description of the problem to srts@jhu.edu, or by submitting a Trouble Report. Emergency Telephone Numbers Two important emergency telephone numbers to remember are 911 and 410-516-7777. Campus security and local emergency services including Baltimore Police, Fire or Ambulance can be reached from any on-campus phone by dialing 911 or 67777. When 911 is dialed from an on-campus phone, the call is routed through the Homewood Campus Security Dispatcher. If 911 is dialed from a cell phone, the call goes directly to the local Police, Fire Department, or Ambulance Service. There are also seventeen campus emergency telephones, which can be activated by pressing the red button. The JHU WEATHER EMERGENCY LINE can be reached at 410-516-7781 or 1-800-548-9004. The JHU Weather Emergency Line provides information on class and campus closing due to inclement weather. The university may also use the same phone lines occasionally to distribute other urgent information. Dialing System Please note that the Homewood Campus uses a five-digit dialing system. This means, in order to make a Homewood Campus call, you must dial 6 and then the four-digit extension. If you are dialing outside the Homewood Campus, dial "9" + the ten digit number. Refer to the Dialing Chart for Access Codes to connect to the Peabody Institute and the East Baltimore Medical Campus. |
