ResNet Ethernet Connections

A ResNet connection is made via an Ethernet connection, which allows you access to a wide range of host computers at very high speeds. In addition to HITS' shared systems and other JHU information resources, a ResNet Ethernet connection allows direct access to a full range of Internet services worldwide such as e-mail, the Web, Usenet newsgroups, telnet, and ftp. Most of these applications are available using simple internet browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape).  FTP and telnet can be used via applications built into most Windows operating systems as well as applications downloaded and installed from web resources (www.downloads.com).

A ResNet Ethernet connection usually requires optional hardware for your PC or Macintosh computer. You need a 10Base-T or "twisted-pair" network interface card for a PC (about $100), or a 10Base-T transceiver for a Macintosh with built-in Ethernet, such as the Power Mac (about $50). You'll also need to add network software: drivers to communicate with your Ethernet card (drivers are provided with the ethernet card), the TCP/IP network protocol, and an Internet browser (e.g. Internet Explorer; Netscape) to connect to Internet services.

If you use HITS Ethernet hardware (see below for more details), HITS can provide you with free Ethernet hardware drivers, TCP/IP software, and Internet applications for Windows 98/XP/2000 and Macintosh (8.0 or higher) operating systems. You will also need a "network station cable" to connect your computer to the Residential Network; the cost of this cable is included in your ResNet connection fee.
