Michael T. McCarty

Chief Network Officer

Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Health System

Mr. McCarty is the Chief Network Officer for the Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Health System. Mr. McCarty is responsible for networking, telecommunications, Local Area Networks, network security, and networked based services (directory, email, FTP. DNS, web services, infrastructure, etc.). He has been involved in IT since the mid 1970’s. His background and experiences include various senior management positions with responsibility for applications development, operations and technical support, systems integration, web based architectures, networking and telecommunications. He is currently involved with a number of major projects that include: widespread deployment of wireless technologies; implementation of very high bandwidth computing services involving animation, image information and research in a virtual environment; Internet 2 activities including work with the National Sciences Foundation with the development and deployment of middle-ware products and services, as well as innovative efforts dealing with network security.

Prior to joining Johns Hopkins, Mr. McCarty was president of a technology consulting firm, Adaptive Sciences Corporation. Prior to Adaptive Sciences, he had 22 years of experience as a senior manager with two other corporations. 

Mr. McCarty had been involved in an advisory capacity with IT curriculum development for both the Essex Community College and Villa Julie College. He has served on the Foundation Board of the Community Colleges of Baltimore County and on the advisory board for Network Maryland. He has also been involved with development of innovative educational solutions for the Baltimore City School System and the Digital Harbor High School project.  Mr. McCarty was one of the founders of the Baltimore Education and Research Network (BERN).
