Enterprise Network Architecture and Design has deployed an 802.11 a/b/g 56mbps compliant wireless LAN (local area network) in select areas of the Johns Hopkins Educational and Medical Community. The links below list the coverage areas on each campus. To access the secure wireless LAN, a laptop computer must be configured with an 802.11a/b/g wireless LAN adapter capable of WPA(Wi-Fi Protected Access), PEAP (Protected Extensible Access Protocol), and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) 256 bit encryption. Please read our "Wireless Networking Policy" before proceeding. Before you begin: Hopkins IT requests that you do the following: 1. Download the most recent operating system patches, updates and hotfixes for your platform (Windows, Mac, or Linux). 2. Download updated firmware and drivers for your wireless hardware. 3. Make sure you have Symantec anti-vurs installed and updated with the latest virus definitions. You can click here to download Symantec Corporate Edition. 4. Make sure the internal time and date are correct on your device. This allows for proper acceptance of our security certificate. 5. In addition, all firewalls must be disabled before registration and enabled upon completion. "hopkins" Wireless Network Johns Hopkins Information Technology is upgrading the wireless network. The two new networks are "hopkins" and "JHGuestnet". They will appear on your wireless device as you travel around the Johns Hopkins Institutions. Each network will serve a different audience. Many of you are familiar with the "standard" and "enhanced" networks. These will be retired along with the installation of the new networks. The "hopkins" network will be more secure. Its audience is Johns Hopkins' staff, faculty, and students, or anyone with a JHED (Johns Hopkins Enterprise Directory) ID. The "hopkins" network uses WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access), PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol), and powerful 256 bit AES encryption (Advanced Encrytpion Standard). In addition, "hopkins" uses Cisco Clean Access, which is commonly used on university campuses around the country. There are no more, "hard to administer and distribute", WEP key installations. The "hopkins" network provides a high speed data link to all the resources on the network similar to a wired link. The supported operating systems are Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Vista, and Mac OS 10.4X. Please refer to the links listed below for step by step instructions. "JHGuestnet" Wireless Network "JHGuestnet" is for casual use by guest and visitors to all Johns Hopkins Institutions. It is for anyone who does not have JHED access. It will provide connectivity to the internet and limited functionality to outside applications. It is easy to use and grants access to all users. Enable your wireless card and open your favorite internet browser. Just agree to the terms of use and you are connected. There is no registration and no configuration of the network in the operating system. There is no specific operating system installation. It is that easy! Instructions can be found at the following link: JHGUESTNET Wireless Instructions "jhmiradio" Wireless Network Jhmiradio will still be available on the East Baltimore campus and select other locations. A phase-out of this network will be implemented in the near term. Please contact the Help Desk at 410-955-4357 to set up an appointment, if you need to have "Jhmiradio" configured. |
