MEPISMEPIS (pronounced MEHP-us) is a Linux distribution that includes the K Desktop Environment (KDE) based on the Trolltech Qt toolkit; it also includes the ClamAV anti-virus program. MEPIS was originally released in 2003 by Warren Woodford, who built it to satisfy his own desire for a simple, user-friendly platform that incorporated the functions he found most useful. MEPIS was developed based on Debian, another Linux distribution, and continues to include many of the features of that distribution.
Mesh Connectivity LayerMesh Connectivity Layer (MCL) is a technology that allows a computer user to connect to a wireless mesh network that uses Wi-Fi or WiMAX. The wireless mesh network can be connected to the Internet through a single computer using a leased T-1 line or broadband satellite connection, allowing all network users high-speed Internet access. The MCL system is being developed by Microsoft, in conjunction with several major universities, for computers that use Windows operating systems.

Metabase

a database for storing metadata (data used to describe other data) for a specific purpose.

Middleware

often referred to as "glue", is a layer of software between the network and the applications. This software provides services such as identification, authentication, authorization, directories, and security. In today's Internet, applications usually have to provide these services themselves, which leads to competing and incompatible standards. By promoting standardization and interoperability, Middleware will make advanced network applications much easier to use.

Modulation

the addition of information to an electronic or optical signal carrier.

(MOM) Microsoft Operations Manager

tool to help manage server operations and avoid common IT service woes.

(MSC) Medical Services Corporation

provides independent medical advocate services and cost and quality management services to employer health and welfare plans.

Multicast

single packets copied by the network and sent to a specific subset of network addresses. These addresses are specified in the Destination Address Field.

MytobMytob is a worm used by hackers to gather personal and financial information through phishing, a form of e-mail fraud where the perpetrator sends out legitimate-looking messages that appear to come from well-known and trustworthy Web sites. Since Mytob first originated in February 2005, numerous variants have emerged. Some forms of the worm cause infected computers to send out e-mail messages containing a link to a Web site that hosts rogue programming code. Earlier versions appear as e-mail attachments.

National Nanotechnology InitiativeThe National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) is a research-and development (R&D) program funded by the U.S. government and managed by the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC). It contributes funds for university and government education and R&D programs, and promotes partnerships and communication among corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions.

(NDS) Novell Directory Services

Net Meeting

a software package from Microsoft that delivers a complete Internet conferencing solution for all Windows users with multi-point data conferencing, text chat, whiteboard, and file transfer, as well as point-to-point audio and video.

Network

series of points interconnected by communication paths; they can be interconnected with other networks and contain subnetworks.

(NGI) Next Generation Internet

will create a foundation for more powerful and versatile networks of the 21st century. It will foster partnerships among academia, industry, and Government that will keep the U.S. at the cutting-edge of information and communications technologies. It will accelerate the introduction of new networking services for our businesses, schools, and homes. This initiative is possible because of the very strong Federal agency programs that are currently underway. The Large Scale Networking R&D crosscut for FY 1998, for example, is $288.3 million, which included the $100 million for NGI.

Non-liscenced Radio Frequencies for Data

wireless LANs are typically designed to operate in portions of the radio spectrum where the FCC does not require the end-user to purchase license to use the airwaves. In the U.S. most wireless LANs broadcast over one of the ISM (Instrumentation, Scientific, and Medical) bands. These include 902-928 MHZ, 2.4-2.483 GHz, 5.15-5.35 GHz, and 5.725-5.875 GHz. Licensed data networks , usually point to point or point to multipoint run at 2.5-2.7 GHz and 28-31GHz.

(NSF) National Science Foundation

the National Science Foundation funds research and education in science and engineering. It does this through grants, contracts, and cooperative agreements to more than 2,000 colleges, universities and other research and/or education institutions in all parts of the United States.
