Mobile Device Migration & Support

This page is intended to provide information about the changes needed for PDA devices to continue to synchronize with the Exchange email servers after the GroupWise migration takes place.  It WILL BE necessary to re-establish connectivity with the email servers by making changes to your device.  The required changes will vary based on the device type.

Activesync is Microsoft's built-in PDA over the air synchronization method for Windows Mobile Devices v5.0 or higher, Apple iPhone (3G & above), or other mobile phones which support Activesync. Please check with your device manufacturer for Activesync availability.

Many PDA devices come pre-installed with an email application that provides connectivity to email systems via POP/IMAP.  While this is not the preferred method for connectivity, POP/IMAP are available with the new Exchange email system.  Customers must complete this request form to use POP/IMAP.

Overview of Blackberry Integration with Exchange

Blackberry devices purchased though the corporate phone plans offered by AT&T and Verizon can be integrated with the Hopkins Exchange email system. This provides the following capabilities:

  • Near real-time delivery of email messages to the Blackberry with encrypted data transmission
  • Two-way synchronization of email message status information (i.e. messages marked as read, unread, or deleted)
  • Over-the-air synchronization of Exchange calendar changes
  • Address book synchronization with Exchange Contacts Folder
  • Access to Exchange system Global Address List (GAL) to lookup email addresses of Exchange users

This service is provided at a cost of $18.50 per month. Please read through the Checklist and Support information then fill out the BES Setup Request Form to activate service.

Windows Mobile Devices &  iPhone (3G version & above)

Microsoft Exchange Activesync is currently supported on the 3G iPhone and Windows Mobile (version 5 & above) devices. Although Enterprise Messaging does not support the devices themselves customers interested in using Activesync should contact their PC/LAN support specialist for any device specific issues.
