Johns Hopkins Instant Messaging (JHIM) offers a secure, internal Instant Messaging solution that can be used to collaborate among people within the Johns Hopkins community.  JHIM uses Microsoft's Live Communication Server 2005 and offers advanced capabilities beyond text-based IM including voice, video, and application sharing.   Various IM client software can be used to access the JHIM service, but the most prevalent and recommended client is Microsoft Office Communicator 2005.  Like most popular IM clients, the Hopkins solution supports "presence detection" which can help determine if people are available through the use of status indicators like "busy", "away" or "online".

How do I start using JHIM?

1. Obtain the License

The use of JHIM requires a Microsoft LCS 2005 Client Access License.  Faculty and staff that participate in the Microsoft campus license agreement (MEEC) do not have to purchase additional licenses.  If you are covered under the MEEC agreement, please email lcsfeedback@jhmi.edu and request that your JHIM account be activated.  Please be sure to included your JHED ID in the email.

Those that need to purchase a license can do so through SPARS at:  http://spars.jhu.edu

Look for the line item in SPARS for:

LCS Instant Messaging CAL (annual subscription)
