JHEM Client Settings

Secure Mac OS X Mail 2.x – POPS

  1. Start Mac Mail. 
  2. Choose the Mail menu, and select Preferences.
  3. Click on the Accounts options at the top
  4. If setting up for the first time, click the + sign at the bottom to add a new account, otherwise make sure your JHU account name is highlighted on the left side and click on the  Account Information tab at the top
  5. Enter the following information:
    • Account type: POP
    • Description: JHU (or whatever you want to call it).
    • Email Address: your preferred email alias (ex: lid@jhu.edu)
    • Full Name: Your name as you want it appear in the From header of your message.
    • Incoming Mail server: jhem.johnshopkins.edu
    • User name: your JHED login ID
    • Password: your JHED password
    • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.johnshopkins.edu
  6. Click on the Server Settings button and enter the following information to configure the outgoing SMTP server: 
    • Server Name should already be populated
    • The port should remain the default 25
    • Check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
    • Authentication: Password
    • User Name: Enter your JHED login ID.
    • Password: Enter your JHED password.
  7. Click on OK
  8. Now click on the Advanced tab at the top to configure the incoming mail server.
  9. Check the box at the bottom that says Use SSL
  10. Make sure the Authentication options is set to Password and the port is set to 995
  11. You may want to check the settings for Remove copy after retrieving a message
    • You can use the drop down menu to choose the frequency of deleting messages from the server. This is recommended to ensure your account stays within it's allocated disk quota.
  12. Close the Preferences window and now you should be able to send and receive email.

Secure Mac OS X Mail 2.x – IMAPS

  1. Start Mac Mail. 
  2. Choose the Mail menu, and select Preferences.
  3. Click on the Accounts options at the top
  4. If setting up for the first time, click the + sign at the bottom to add a new account, otherwise make sure your JHU account name is highlighted on the left side and click on the Account Information tab at the top
  5. Enter the following information:
    • Account type: IMAP
    • Description: JHU (or whatever you want to call it).
    • Email Address: your preferred email alias (ex: lid@jhu.edu)
    • Full Name: Your name as you want it appear in the From header of your message.
    • Incoming Mail server: jhem.johnshopkins.edu
    • User name: your JHED login ID
    • Password: your JHED password
    • Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.johnshopkins.edu
  6. Click on the Server Settings button and enter the following information to configure the outgoing SMTP server: 
    • Server Name should already be populated
    • The port should remain the default 25
    • Check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)

    • Password: Enter your JHED password.
  7. Click on OK
