JHEM Client Settings

Secure Eudora for Windows – POPS

  1. Start Eudora. If you do not have Eudora installed, please visit the Eudora Software Site.
  2. In the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Getting Started icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Real name: your own as you want it to appear in messages you send
    • Return address: your preferred email address (ex: lid@jhu.edu or lid@jhmi.edu)
    • Mail Server (Incoming): jhem.johnshopkins.edu.
    • Login Name: your JHED Login ID
    • SMTP Server (Outgoing): smtp.johnshopkins.edu
  4. Click the Checking Mail icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Mail Server: jhem.johnshopkins.edu
    • Login Name: JHED Login ID
    • Check Mail every XX minutes: The recommended setting for checking mail is 5 minutes or longer.
    • Send on check: your choice
    • Save password: unchecked
    • Secure Sockets when Receiving: Required, Alternate Port
      • PLEASE NOTE:  You will need to attempt to check mail once and then come back to Tools -> Options -> Checking Mail.  Then click on the 'Last SSL Info Button'.
      • Now click the Certificate Information Manager and then click on the + next to the first cert listed under Server Certificates
      • Now highlight (click on) the one below named "US, Maryland, Johns Hopkins, jhem.johnshopkins.edu"
      • Click Add to Trusted and then click Done
      • Click OK until you are back to the main Eudora Window and check your mail again
  5. Click the Incoming Mail icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Server configuration: POP
    • Leave mail on server: Check this option if you read your mail from multiple clients/computers. However leaving mail on server will use your mail quota more quickly. Configure the client to delete messages after X days, or when emptied from Trash.
    • Authentication style: Passwords
  6. Click the Sending Mail icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Return address: your preferred alias (ex: lid@jhu.edu)
    • Domain to add to unqualified addresses: jhu.edu or jhmi.edu
    • SMTP Server: smtp.johnshopkins.edu
    • Allow authentication: checked
    • Immediate send: checked
    • Send on check: checked if desired
    • Secure Sockets when Sending: Set this to "Required STARTTLS" if you are off campus and use our SMTP servers, you want to authenticate to our servers whenever you send.
      • PLEASE NOTE:  If you set this to "Required STARTTLS", you will need to follow similar steps like Checking Mail (screen shots available here)
      • After setting this, you will need to attempt to send a message, and receive an error message
      • Click Certificate Information Manager
      • Click to highlight the cert under Server Certificates
      • Click Add to Trusted and then Done
      • Click OK until back to main Eudora Window and then send your message again 
  7. The rest of the settings can be set at your discretion
  8. Click OK when finished.

Secure Eudora for Windows – IMAPS

  1. Start Eudora. If you do not have Eudora installed, please visit the Eudora Software Site.
  2. In the Tools menu, click Options.
  3. Click the Getting Started icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Real name: your own as you want it to appear in messages you send
    • Return address: your preferred email address (ex: lid@jhu.edu or lid@jhmi.edu)
    • Mail Server (Incoming): jhem.johnshopkins.edu 
    • Login Name: your JHED Login ID
    • SMTP Server (Outgoing): smtp.johnshopkins.edu
  4. Click the Checking Mail icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Mail Server: jhem.johnshopkins.edu
    • Login Name: JHED Login ID
    • Send on check: your choice
    • Save password: unchecked
