JHEM Client Settings

Secure Eudora for Mac – POPS
NOTE:
Eudora 5.2/6.x does not support SSL for Mac OS 8.x, 10.0.x, or 10.1.x, these instructions are for Mac OS 9.x and 10.2.x.

  1. Start Eudora. If you do not have Eudora installed, please visit the Eudora Software Site.
  2. Open the Eudora Application Folder and double-click the Eudora icon.
  3. When asked if you want to use the system keychain, click Yes
  4. When asked if you want to import mail from another program, click No to continue
  5. Go to the Special menu and click Settings
    • Username: your JHED Login ID
    • Mail Server: jhem.johnshopkins.edu.
    • Real Name: your name as you want it to appear in messages you send
    • SMTP Server: smtp.johnshopkins.edu
    • Return Address: your preferred alias (ex: lid@jhu.edu)
  6. Click the Checking Mail icon. The recommended settings are: 
    • Username: your JHED Login ID
    • Mail Host: jhem.johnshopkins.edu
    • Server configuration: POP
    • Authentication style: Passwords
    • Check Mail every XX minutes: The recommended setting for checking mail is 5 minutes or longer.
    • Leave mail on server for XX days: Check this option if you read your mail from multiple clients/computers. However leaving mail on server will use your mail quota more quickly. Configure the client to delete messages after X days, or when emptied from Trash.
  7. Click the Sending Mail icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Return address: your preferred alias (ex: lid@jhu.edu)
    • Default Domain: jhu.edu or jhmi.edu 
    • SMTP Server: smtp.johnshopkins.edu
    • Allow authentication: checked
    • Immediate send: checked
    • Send on check: checked if desired
  8. Scroll down on the left side until you see SSL and click the icon:
    • SSL for POP: Required (Alternate Port)
    • SSL for SMTP: Required (TLS)  NOTE: It's best to set this when you will be using our SMTP servers when you're located off campus.
  9. The rest of the settings can be set at your discretion
  10. Click OK when finished.
  11. Upon first mail check/send, you may receive a messge that the SSL Certificate is not in your Keychain. Click Yes to add it to your Keychain.  If the "Unknown SSL Certificate" window appears, choose Open.  Then "Add Certificate" and make sure the Add to Keychain is checked and set "Always Trust".
  12. Click OK

NOTE:

    • The other default settings are fine
  7. Click the Sending Mail icon. The recommended settings are:
    • Return address: your preferred alias (ex: lid@jhu.edu)
    • Default Domain: jhu.edu or jhmi.edu
    • SMTP Server: smtp.johnshopkins.edu
    • Allow authentication: checked
    • Immediate send: checked
    • Send on check: checked if desired
