How to setup a Blackberry for use as a pager

Using Level 1 Notification (found under Profiles on your device) will allow you to specify different alerts (beeps, tones, vibrations) for email pages and "regular" email messages.

  1. Connect to www.cingular.com/blackberry or www.blackberry.com/go/vzw.  On the Cingular site, look for "BIS Email Login" on the screen.  You do not need to upgrage to the newer version of the web client if you see a message to do so, just click continue.
  2. Click Create Your Account (If you already have an account setup, login and proceed to step 7)
  3. Enter the PIN and IMEI or ESN number for the device. This can be found by going into the Options (Wrench icon) > Status
  4. Click I Agree at the Terms and Conditions screen
  5. Enter the user information on the Account Setup screen. Select a User ID and Password. Note: Your User ID will be your default email address (i.e. username@mycingular.blackberry.net or username@vzw.blackberry.net)
  6. Click Done and you will receive a message "Account Setup Complete"
  7. Login to the Cingular or Verizon web site as instructed in step #1.  Once you are logged into the Blackberry web client window, click on the "Filters" tab.
  8. If no filters are defined, click "new", or edit the existing Default filter.
  9. Active the button for "Foward Messages to Handheld" or:
  10. Under the "Do the Following with messages when no Filters apply" section, select Forward messages to Handheld and place a check mark in the box next to Level 1 notification
  11. Click on Save and Close
  12. After completing these steps, edit the profiles on the Blackberry device and change the way Level 1 Notifications are handled.  (ie...vibrate/tone when Level 1 message is received).
  13. IF YOU GET A NEW BLACKBERRY:  be sure to record your user ID and password for the Blackberry web client login screen before you replace your old device.  If you can't remember your old password, you can request it on the web site and it will be sent to your Blackberry. Then you can login to the Blackberry web site (step #1), click "Profile", click "Change Handheld", and enter the PIN# on your new Blackberry.
