Johns Hopkins Instant Messaging (JHIM) Johns Hopkins Instant Messaging (JHIM) offers a secure, internal Instant Messaging solution that can be used to collaborate among people within the Johns Hopkins community. JHIM uses Microsoft's Office Communications Server 2007 and offers advanced capabilities beyond text-based IM including voice, video, and application sharing. Various IM client software can be used to access the JHIM service, but the most prevalent and recommended client is Microsoft Office Communicator 2007. Like most popular IM clients, the Hopkins solution supports "presence detection" which can help determine if people are available through the use of status indicators like "busy", "away" or "online". Obtain the License The use of JHIM requires a Microsoft Communicator 2007 Client Access License. Faculty and staff that participate in the Microsoft campus license agreement (MEEC) do not have to purchase additional licenses. If you are covered under the MEEC agreement, please email lcsadmin@jhmi.edu and request that your JHIM account be activated. Please be sure to included your JHED ID in the email. Those that need to purchase a license can do so through SPARS at: http://spars.jhu.edu. Look for the line item in SPARS for: LCS Instant Messaging CAL (annual subscription) (Hosted by Enterprise Services) License WIN 2. Install the Client Desktop Computing Services customers should contact their LAN Administrator for information and assistance with client software. If you DO have a LAN Administrator: After obtaining a CAL, contact your LAN administrator so the Office Communicator can be properly installed on your computer. If your computer is part of a managed computer environment, automated methods for installing the client can be used. If you DO NOT have a LAN Administrator: After obtaining a CAL, the Microsoft Office Communicator client can be downloaded from this page.
