Getting Support

Students who purchase Mobile Computing Program (MCP) notebooks may visit Technical Assistance during normal business hours to obtain support.  The Technical Assistance service window is located in the Garland Hall basement near the vending machines.  For MCP telephone support, dial (410) 516-3382, or e-mail for MCP support at mobile.computing@jhu.edu.

Repair Services.  The following services are provided to students who purchase an MCP notebook:

  • arrangements for warranty repair of notebooks
  • reloading the software as loaded at the factory
  • arrangements to borrow a loaner notebook system
  • support for wireless networking
  • software troubleshooting, virus and spyware removal, etc.

NOTES
a) For whatever reason, if you fail to return the loaner system upon request by the MCP service coordinator, your student account will be charged for the cost of the system.
b) If the loaner system is stolen, lost, or damaged while on loan to you, you are responsible for any replacement or repair cost incurred by the University.
c) Loaner systems are not intended to be used during extended non-academic periods such as semester breaks or holidays, nor are they permitted to be removed from the vicinity of the Johns Hopkins campus (for example, to a family permanent residence address in another state), without express permission from the MCP service coordinator.
d) In all cases, users are responsible for making backups of their own data files
.

Training and Consulting.  Additional student services, such as training and consulting on notebook and software usage, are available from the Krieger Hall Computing Lab at the Homewood campus (410-516-4242).

Faculty and staff may contact the IT Support Center serving their location. The Support Center can be reached at the following phone numbers:

Homewood campus: 410-516-HELP
JHMI East Baltimore campus: 410-955-HELP
JH@Eastern campus: 443-997-HELP

The Support Center will log a service ticket for you which will be assigned to the appropriate IT staff person.

Usage Tips

Changing your password.  MCP Windows systems are shipped from the factory with no initial password on the Administrator account. It is extremely important that you change this password when you receive your computer, or if the JHU software image load is reinstalled. See instructions on how to change your password (also view this if your system is "stuck" on the "Welcome" screen).

Making backups. To avoid losing all of your document files and other work, in case your laptop's hard drive should fail, you should always make regular backups of these files. Many of the MCP notebooks come with CD or DVD burners. Rewritable CD's or DVD's can be used just like a floppy diskette to store a backup copy of the files you can't afford to lose. If you don't have a CD or DVD burner, you have other options, such as: using a USB Flash drive or other removable drive for backups, using an online, Internet-based storage solution, or using the JShare Service to temporarily store files. It is especially important to backup personal files if your computer will be away for servicing!
