Stephanie L. Reel, Chief Information Officer and Vice Provost for Information Technology for the Johns Hopkins University, and Vice President for Information Services for Johns Hopkins Medicine, received a B.S. in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland, and an M.B.A. in Business Administration from Loyola College of Baltimore.
As CIO for all divisions of the Johns Hopkins University and Health System, Ms. Reel leads the implementation of the strategic plan and operational redesign for information services, networking, telecommunications, as well as clinical, research, and instructional technologies. She formed a governance structure to support funding and priority setting across both the university and health system to meet the education and research needs of the enterprise. Ms. Reel has more than twenty-five years experience in Information Systems, working with educators, regulators, researchers, health care providers and payers. Under her direction, the Johns Hopkins Health System is enhancing and advancing the use of the Johns Hopkins Electronic Patient Record, utilizing web-based and client/server technologies. The goal of this system and its components is to create the paperless, wireless and filmless Hospital of the Future. These efforts have been recognized by Computerworld and the Smithsonian Institute with an award that remains on display in the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of American History. She is now working with other leaders toward a regional electronic patient record. Also under her direction, the Johns Hopkins University has implemented self-service solutions for faculty, staff and students, leveraging the power of Internet 2 and other emerging technologies to support electronically enhanced education and research. Ms. Reel was named CIO of the Year 2000 by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and is the 2002 recipient of the National CIO 20/20 Vision Leader Award. She is a member of the Healthcare Information Systems Executive Association, the College of Healthcare Information Systems Executives, the Healthcare Information Management and Systems Society, the Healthcare Advisory Council, Educause, and the Inaugural Board of Directors for the National Alliance for Health Information Technology. Ms. Reel currently serves on the client advisory boards of IBM, GE Medical Systems, Microsoft Healthcare Users Group, Eclipsys, Compuware, and Verizon. She also serves on both the State of Maryland's Medical Privacy and Confidentiality Advisory Board and the Information Systems Advisory Council for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
