Installation information for new Symantec or Norton AntiVirus Users

Uninstall Competing Products!
Before using Symantec or Norton AntiVirus (SAV or NAV), uninstall other companies' anti-virus product to prevent software conflicts and system crashes. In most cases, it is safe to install later versions of SAV or NAV without having to uninstall earlier versions of SAV or NAV.
How to uninstall old products. Windows anti-virus software may come with an "uninstall" program, or you can use the "Add/Remove Programs" control panel to remove the product.

For Macintoshes, removal generally requires deleting the product software folder, the control panel for the product, and any extensions being used for the product (one might find these by doing a "Find" for the name of the software, e.g., Virex).

Symantec AntiVirus Automatic Updates
An JH-centralized automatic updating service is available for Windows SAV users to receive virus definition and client updates on an automatic, regular basis from locally-managed servers. See the Symantec AntiVirus Automatic Updates information page for more information.

Home Users
For home computers users, it is recommended that you use LiveUpdate with Symantec AntiVirus. LiveUpdate can be used manually, by clicking the LiveUpdate button in the Symantec AntiVirus Client program, or it can be automated to run according to a schedule.
