SAV 9 Issues with Internet E-Mail Scanning and Encrypted SMTP Connections Using TLS or SSL

Introduction
In July 2004, e-mail client-server encryption using TLS or SSL was enabled on the Johns Hopkins enterprise e-mail relays. This enables e-mail users to encrypt SMTP authentication both on or off campus.

The Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition version 9 (SAV 9) client program has a new feature called Internet E-mail Auto-Protect. This feature constantly scans the body text and attachment files associated with your e-mail messages to ensure that they do not contain viruses.

Users of SAV 9 report that they cannot send e-mail using the encrypted e-mail connection when SAV 9's Internet E-mail Auto-Protect feature is activated. When attempting to send the message they will see the error dialog from SAV as portrayed at right. Their e-mail client program may also report an error message, such as the one portrayed below in Eudora 6.1.

Details and Workaround
Symantec AntiVirus Internet e-mail scanning does not work with an e-mail provider using the SSL protocol. The workaround is to disable the Internet E-mail Auto-Protect feature in SAV 9. (The Internet E-mail Auto-Protect feature may be disabled in SAV 9 using the configuration panel portrayed at right.) E-mail attachments will continue to be scanned by SAV 9's File System Auto-Protect whenever they are accessed, just as in previous versions of SAV Corporate Edition.
