Features

Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) performs virus scanning both on-demand and "real-time" in the background while you use your computer. On-demand virus scans can be scheduled to automatically occur on specific dates and times.

Advanced features such as Symantec's innovative Bloodhound™ heuristics scanner analyzes program logic for virus-like behavior. A Trojan Horse detection engine can prevent virus infection from Internet sources, and state-of-the-art technology automatically blocks destructive Active X and Java applets from entering your computer.

A quarantine feature isolates infected files in a safe area on your computer until you can repair them, ensuring that your other files stay clean and that you don't accidentally send infected files to anyone else. Your or your network administrator can send quarantined or other suspicious files to Symantec for evaluation.

The LiveUpdate feature ensures that the SAV scanner always has the latest virus definitions.

In networked computing environments, your network administrator may offer centrally-managed LiveUpdate, SAV client configuration, and virus monitoring.

LiveUpdate

One of the most important features of Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) is the built-in LiveUpdate™ feature, which enables SAV to automatically retrieve new virus definitions at the click of a button. This ensures that SAV is prepared to detect the latest viruses. Your network administrator may have automated the LiveUpdate process if SAV is being centrally managed at your location.

Virus definitions are updated at least weekly, and more often during a "virus scare."

As a backup method for obtaining the latest virus definitions, Symantec Security Response's download page will allow you to download the latest virus definitions.

To check when your virus definitions were last updated, start the Symantec AntiVirus Client and check the virus definition date.
